What is NLP?

              by Stephen Lambe

  • Imagine what you would do if your bread baking machine arrived without instructions! This of course, pales in comparison to the immense complexity of our brains. Each of us possesses in our skulls, the most sophisticated computer ever conceived of and no one thought to provide instructions on how to make it work to its full potential!

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) studies the structure of how we think and experience the world. From this, NLP has developed models and techniques for quickly and effectively changing thoughts, behaviours and beliefs that limit people into thoughts, behaviours and beliefs that help people get what they want.

NLP IS AN ATTITUDE

  • characterised by a sense of curiosity, experimentation and adventure. It's an attitude that looks at life as a rare and unprecedented opportunity to learn.

NLP IS A METHODOLOGY

  • based on the presupposition that behaviour has a structure which can be modelled, learned, taught, and changed. Another person's behaviour can be duplicated by studying what that person does inside their head to produce results. NLP was initially created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, who began modelling and duplicating the "magical results" of a few top communicators and therapists.

NLP LEAVES BEHIND A TRAIL OF TECHNIQUES

  • which enable the practitioner to organise information and perception in ways that allow them to achieve results that were once inconceivable.

NEURO Our "Nervous System" through which experience is received and processed via the five senses.
LINGUISTIC Our language and nonverbal communication systems through which neural representations are coded, ordered, and given meaning.
PROGRAMMING The ability to organise our communication and neurological systems to achieve specific desired goals and results.

Today, NLP is widely used

  • in business to improve management, sales, performance and inter-personal skills
  • in education to better understand learning styles, develop rapport with students and parents and to aid in motivation
  • in parenting to help our children develop their self esteem, learn more effectively and deal with the challenges that life gives us
  • in coaching and therapy to help people overcome challenges, limiting beliefs and become more effective in the world
  • as a profound set of tools for personal development.

Neuro Linguistic Programming

              by Lee Bannister

  • "You already possess the most powerful tool known to mankind - the human mind. Unfortunately, it didn't come with a set of instructions, so you probably don't yet know how to use your mind to its full potential.

This is where Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) comes in. Using tried and tested techniques, NLP allows you to understand your mind's potential, giving you a degree of command over your feelings and control over your thoughts you may never have believed is possible. Many of the techniques date back to Milton Eriksons days, in the late 70s Dr Richard Bandler put together a number of techniques and built a program called Nero Linguistic programming.

WHAT IS NLP FOR?

  • NLP can be applied to business, health and well-being, counselling and therapy, relationships, sport, training and education, negotiation, leadership, presentation skills, goal setting etc. It is about how to run your brain to achieve the results you desire - a means by which people can achieve goals and better communicate. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Think of something that you would like to change about yourself. It could be a phobia, a lack of confidence, a limiting belief, a dependency on smoking, a tendency to put on weight, a bad habit or even an inability to progress in your career.

Now imagine being free of that problem. Imagine how You would feel, what you would see, what you would hear, what you may think to yourself. Just how good would that be? Just imagine how much better your life would be if you achieve this?

Through using a range of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques it is possible to make significant changes to any area of your life that needs the change and this can often be achieved quickly.

If you think in terms of the brain being a computer and our thoughts and actions being the software programmes, then NLP is a kind of software manual.

Essentially, by gaining an understanding of how we create and maintain our inner thoughts and feelings when we have a problem, it is possible then to change them to new thoughts and feelings that have a more positive effect on our lives. When you have qualified with us as a trained NLP practitioner, you will not only be able to do this for yourself but for others too!

HOW TO EXPLAIN NLP TO YOUR EMPLOYER

  • One of the questions that we receive most often from people looking into our training is how to gain support from their employers. Many people are already convinced of the personal applications of NLP, and we see this as directly beneficial in many areas of the work environment. However, not all employers prioritise the health and happiness of their employees, so here are some arguments that you may find helpful.

GOAL SETTINGS

  • Organisations thrive on the setting and achievement of goals. NLP has comprehensive processes that you can apply to a whole range of goals. You can use this to create outcomes which have the maximum chance of success. You can also use this to coach other people towards setting outcomes that mesh with those of the organisation.

COMMUNICATIONS

  • NLP approaches communication on many levels. It includes principles that can increase the clarity of verbal and written communications. It also includes training to make the most of the non-verbal sides of communication - how to make the most of posture, rhythm and tonality to create connections with people, to better understand their needs and to communicate your own.

VALUES & MOTIVATION

  • Though this is far from universal, many forward looking businesses consider that a healthy business attends to more than its financial bottom line. People do work for money, and businesses need money like people need oxygen. At the same time, businesses thrive when they have motivated employees. Having a frame to talk about values and a means of aligning them with work often motivates employees far more effectively than simply offering more money. NLP supplies such a frame.

SYSTEMS THINKING

  • NLP helps people see how systems work. Often when we implement a change there are unforeseen and unwanted consequences elsewhere in the system. Learning a more systemic approach helps predict the unwanted side effects and find the point at which the greatest change can be created with the minimum effort. Our courses are designed from a systems thinking point of view, and the techniques of NLP are also applied systemically. Consequently it is a rich learning environment for people who want to develop their ability to plan systematically.

RECOGNISING PERSONAL LIMITS

  • Many people are limited in what they achieve not by their innate ability but by their beliefs or the strategies that they operate by in different situations. NLP teaches ways both to analyse and learn to apply successful strategies in different fields. Equally, NLP has ways of identifying when limits are based on beliefs, or a sense of identity - most people with a degree of intuition can identify these limits. NLP adds approaches that allow the change of beliefs far more effectively than logical argument or ordering people from a place of authority.

PRESENCE & PRESENTATION

  • Public speaking is frightening to many people. Business life is full of presentations, sales, interviews, and meetings. Being able to manage your state is crucial to successful presentation - and NLP is full of methods that can help you manage our state. Equally importantly, you can use those methods to help lead other people to more resourceful states. Beyond the question of states is having presence - the ability to stand up or stand out as who you are can allow you to think, and to influence in a great variety of situations with integrity.

SUMMARY

  • NLP's applications are wide. Hopefully you will find the above selection useful as a framework to adapt for your own situation. Some of the areas covered may apply better to you than others and you may find it more effective to take one strand and develop it for the people who make the decisions. You'll get the other parts on the course anyway! If you would like more information or help in adapting an approach to your employers then we are available to help.
